Good Restaurants in Rathmullan

Eating out in Rathmullan in 2013:

Ferry Gate Restaurant and Wine Bar- Pier Road, Rathmullan, Co. Donegal. Tel: 074 9158779  website:

We recently had the pleasure of dining in this wonderful restaurant on New Year’s Eve where we were treated to an outstanding 6 course meal. The food was simply exquisite and extremely well priced given the quality of food served.  The service and atmosphere were also exceptional.  There is a great selection of wines and wonderful fish fresh sourced from local trawlers. The restaurant is in a wonderful setting and very close to the pier on the Inishowen Peninsula. We would definitely give this restaurant a very high recommendation. For us it was  an epicurean gem, truly the culinary cream of Donegal.

Rathmullan House HotelWeeping Elms Restaurant and Cellar Bar. An outstanding feature of this restaurant is the glowing silk Arabian tent designed dining room where the cooking is in Irish Country House style. Where possible, organic fruit, vegetables and herbs are used from the walled garden. Locally caught fish and seafood is a speciality, as is Donegal lamb, which can be described as "pre-salé", a gastronomes term for the wonderful flavour the meat takes on due to the grazing enriched by wind-borne deposits of minerals from salty sea air.

In Jan 2002 and 2007, Rathmullan House were the Ulster winners of the Irish Breakfast Awards in association with Georgina Campbell's Jameson Guide.  Dinner is served from 7.30pm-8.45pm.  Lunches are served in the convivial Cellar Bar during summer months together with an early evening menu.

The Beachcomber  Pub – Serves great food at equally great prices. The bar has a fabulous setting on the sea front and enjoys panoramic views over Lough Swilly towards Inch Island and the Inishowen Peninsula. These superb views can also be enjoyed from the large beer garden which nestles between the bar and the Napoleonic Era Fort which now houses the Flight of the Earls Heritage Centre.

Over the last 10 years the Beachcomber Bar has developed a growing reputationfor its bar food. The bar food menu also has a Kids Section. There is a good choice of wines available including a selection of quarter bottles of wine from the bar. The views from the balcony area of the bar are pretty spectacular.

The Beachncomber Bar is also a popular venue for music with sessions taking place several times a week during the summer months and on most Saturday nights at other times. Music is also arranged for private parties and functions. Charity events take place on a regular basis – pub quizs' , a night at the races etc. At quieter times of the year there are pool, dart and poker competitions. There is also free WiFi available to customers

The Salt “n” Batter  -This is a great take-away restaurant, and set many miles apart from the average takeaway.  It is owned and run by Ronny who used to be the chef in the Waters Edge Restaurant. It carries a really good varied menu and the chips are fantastic.  Highly recommend this restaurant.

Belles Kitchen - next door to the Salt 'n' Batter - Located on the Pier Road which leads down to Rathmullan beach, harbour and small marina Belles Kitchen is a modern Café / Bistro with an excellent á la carte / snack menu. This attractive venue also serves a wide range of cakes and other desserts. Belles Kitchen offers wholesome homemade food in generous portions. AnStad - RathmullanVillage– An amazing vegetarian eaterie… European style café with fantastic homemade food including pancakes and scones that you will be hard pressed to find better anywhere else in Ireland…open only from June to Sept.

Waters Edge Restaurant - The Waters Edge Restaurant rests on the shores of historic Lough Swilly.  Four hundred years ago the Earls of Tir Chonaill and Tir Eoghan set sail from here in what is known as the Flight of the Earls.  Enjoy the atmosphere of this Olde Worlde Restaurant with idyllic views.
